From First Sketch to Front Door: Understanding the Timber Frame Build Process
Building your own home is one of the most exciting projects you can undertake. It is also one of the most complex. With countless decisions to make and multiple stages to coordinate, the journey from a simple idea to receiving the keys to your finished home can feel overwhelming. At Vincent and Parry Timber Framing, we believe that understanding the process helps make the experience more enjoyable and far less daunting. While every project is unique, most timber frame builds follow a broadly similar path from initial concept through to completion. Here's what you can expect along the way.

Stage 1: Planning and Design
Every successful build starts long before the first shovel touches the ground. The planning phase is often the longest and, for many clients, the most challenging part of the project. It involves securing planning permission, refining the design, arranging finance, and developing a clear vision for how the finished building will look and function. While it can feel frustrating to spend time and money before any visible progress is made, this stage is one of the most valuable investments in the entire project. Careful planning reduces problems later and leads to a better finished result.
As part of the timber frame build process, we develop a detailed Building Information Model (BIM) of the project. This fully scaled digital model allows us to visualise the building, generate accurate construction drawings, identify potential issues before work begins, and provide more reliable project costing. Because all drawings are linked to the model, any design changes automatically update throughout the project documentation.
Stage 2: Site Preparation and Groundworks
Once permissions are secured and the project is ready to begin, attention turns to preparing the site.
This may involve clearing vegetation, removing existing structures, setting up temporary facilities, and preparing access for construction. Groundworks then begin, including excavation, drainage installation, service connections, and foundation construction.
Groundworks are often one of the largest and most expensive phases of a build, yet much of the work disappears beneath the finished structure. While it may not provide the visual excitement of seeing a frame erected, it forms the literal foundation of everything that follows and ensures that essential services such as drainage, water, electricity, and heating function correctly for decades to come.

Stage 3: Building the Plinth
Before the timber frame can be installed, a masonry plinth is typically constructed above ground level.
Oak is an incredibly durable material, but like all natural materials it benefits from being protected from prolonged contact with standing water. By raising the frame above external ground level using carefully constructed brickwork, we help ensure the longevity of the structure.
At this stage, the footprint of the building starts to become visible, and clients often get their first real sense of the scale and layout of their future home.
Stage 4: Raising the Timber Frame
This is often the moment clients have been waiting for. While groundworks are taking place on site, much of the timber frame can be manufactured simultaneously in our workshop. Once complete, the frame is delivered to site and erected onto the prepared plinth. Remarkably, the raising of the frame often takes only a few days.
Suddenly, after months of planning and weeks of groundwork, the building begins to take shape. The timber frame forms the structural skeleton of the house and creates the character and architectural beauty that make traditional timber-framed buildings so distinctive.
Stage 5: Making the Building Weatherproof
With the frame in place, the next priority is protecting the structure from the elements. Roof construction, external wall build-ups, insulation systems, weatherboarding, render, and roofing materials are installed to create a weather-tight envelope around the building. Depending on the design, breathable natural building systems may be incorporated to improve moisture management and long-term building performance. Once the roof and external walls are complete, the project is protected from the weather, allowing work to continue efficiently inside.

Stage 6: Floors, Windows and Doors
With the structure weatherproof, attention turns to creating a sealed building envelope. Floor slabs are installed, often incorporating insulation and underfloor heating systems where required. Windows and doors are then fitted, followed by glazing. This stage transforms the project from a construction site into something that genuinely feels like a home. The building is now wind and watertight, allowing internal work to progress regardless of external weather conditions.
Stage 7: Internal Construction and First Fix Services
The internal layout now begins to emerge. Stud walls are installed to form rooms and circulation spaces, while electricians and plumbers complete their first fix work. This includes running cables, pipes, and service routes before walls and ceilings are closed up. Internal wall linings and plaster carriers are then installed in preparation for finishing. By this point, clients can walk through the building and fully understand how the spaces will function.
Stage 8: Plastering and Finishing
Plastering marks an important psychological milestone. Until now, much of the building still feels like a construction project. Once walls are plastered, spaces begin to feel softer, brighter, and significantly more complete. Rooms take shape, light reflects differently, and the building starts to feel lived-in rather than built. This is often when clients begin to visualise themselves living in the finished home.

Stage 9: Second Fix and Final Details
The final stages focus on bringing everything together. Floor finishes are installed, staircases are fitted, internal doors are hung, and second-fix electrical and plumbing work is completed. Decorative finishes, painting, and final adjustments follow, ensuring every detail meets the required standard. These finishing touches are what transform a building into a home.
Stage 10: Handover
The final stage is the simplest—and the most rewarding. Following final inspections and completion checks, the project is handed over to the client. After months of planning, craftsmanship, and construction, the building is ready to begin its next chapter as a home.
