[Oak Framed Barn Conversion, Herefordshire.]
Bespoke barn conversion in Herefordshire, creating a handcrafted oak timber frame within an existing barn shell to form the internal structure, first floor and glazed openings.
This project involved designing and constructing a bespoke oak timber frame to sit within the shell of an existing barn conversion. The client, Jack, had already secured planning permission and worked with architects to develop the overall design, with the external walls and roof structure already in place before we became involved. Our role was to create the internal structural skeleton of the building, including the internal wall framing and first-floor structure, using traditionally crafted oak framing tailored precisely to the existing building.
The project combined careful surveying, detailed planning, and problem solving to create a frame that integrated seamlessly within the existing shell while preserving the openness and character of the barn.
Although the external shell of the barn had already been constructed, fitting a substantial oak frame within an existing structure introduced a unique set of technical challenges. Unlike a conventional timber frame build where the frame can be assembled externally and lifted into position, all work on this project had to be carried out entirely from inside the building.
Every stage of the installation required careful sequencing, precise measurements, and specially considered joint detailing to ensure the frame could be assembled safely and accurately within the confined space.
A detailed survey of the building was carried out before work began to ensure the frame aligned perfectly with the existing structure and architectural plans.
Working from the architect’s drawings and our own survey data, we designed a bespoke oak frame that would provide the structural framework for the internal layout while complementing the scale and character of the barn conversion.
The frame incorporated substantial oak beams and traditional joinery techniques, creating a strong and visually striking internal structure that celebrated the natural qualities of the timber. Attention was paid to the joint design and assembly process to allow the frame to be installed entirely from within the building without compromising structural integrity or craftsmanship.
The use of green oak brought warmth, texture, and character to the interior while also providing a durable and sustainable structural solution designed to last for generations.
Once the design and planning stages were complete, the oak frame was hand crafted and carefully assembled within the barn. Despite the logistical challenges of the site, we were able to install a full structural timber frame inside the barn through careful preparation and attention to detail.
Following completion of the structural frame, we were invited back to complete additional bespoke elements for the project, including face glazing to the main front opening and side elevations. We have also crafted five bespoke windows for the barn, and a custom glazed oak front door to complete the façade.
By combining structural timber framing with bespoke glazing and joinery, the project has evolved into a elegant and unique barn conversion where every crafted element works together cohesively.
The completed structure provides a robust and characterful oak framework that transforms the barn shell into a warm and functional living space. Exposed oak beams, handcrafted detailing, and carefully integrated glazing create a balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary barn conversion design.
While much of the complexity of the project remained hidden behind the scenes, the finished result feels calm, effortless, and naturally suited to the building. The project demonstrates our ability to adapt traditional timber framing techniques to unusual and technically demanding situations while maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
