[Oak Framed Garage]

This project involved the complete replacement of an existing timber garage that had deteriorated beyond repair due to extensive rot and age-related damage. The client wanted to retain the character and simplicity of the original structure while creating a more durable and functional building with a modest increase in size.
Undertaken as a full build from the ground up, the project combined traditional materials, handcrafted detailing, and practical modern construction methods to create a robust and visually refined garage that sits naturally within its setting.
The aim of the project was to carefully replace the failing garage with a new structure that respected the scale and appearance of the original building while improving both longevity and usability. The clients wanted the new garage to feel understated and practical while still showcasing high-quality craftsmanship and natural materials.
The new structure was built around a traditionally crafted green oak frame, providing both strength and character while ensuring the building would age beautifully over time. The frame was paired with larch cladding, chosen for its durability, natural appearance, and ability to weather gracefully within the landscape.

Bespoke cedar garage doors were designed and handcrafted specifically for the project, alongside a matching single access door at the opposite end of the building. These elements added warmth and refinement while maintaining the simple and functional character of the garage.
Particular attention was given to the roof design. A corrugated “wrinkly tin” roof was selected both as a practical solution for the low-pitched single-slope roof and as a subtle reference to the building that previously occupied the site. This choice helped retain the honest feel of the structure while providing a durable and highly effective roofing material suited to the building’s form.
The completed garage is a simple, robust, and beautifully detailed building that balances practicality with craftsmanship and character. The exposed oak structure, natural timber cladding, handcrafted cedar doors, and corrugated roof all work together to create a cohesive building that feels entirely at home within its setting.
While designed primarily as a functional space, the garage reflects the same principles that guide all our projects — thoughtful design, traditional craftsmanship, durable materials, and buildings made to last.
"I am genuinely delighted with my new garage. From the first designs to the finished building, Robin and Jody have excelled themselves."
